Cookies and web logs
When people use our website we keep track of what they do, just like other banks keep track of who's using their branches. This involves keeping a log of activity on our servers and where necessary placing cookies on your computer. A cookie is a small piece of information, like a number or short piece of text, which your browser can store on behalf of a website.
We keep records of the machine being used, the web browser software and a list of all the pages visited. If you're not logged in, this is all anonymous and we don't track who you are. In the areas where you're managing your accounts we obviously know you and track what you do, both for security and so that we can improve the services we offer.
Egg will use this information for detailed analysis of the website to improve the way the site works and also to identify where we might offer relevant products and services through outbound marketing, to those customers who have agreed to receive marketing material from Egg.
In some areas of our site, such as applying for a product, quick log in or servicing your account, we ask your browser to store a cookie for us. This means we can track you as an individual, make decisions like what questions to ask you next, and to make sure that you're logged in correctly.
To help us identify repeat visits from the same computer we also issue cookies that don't get deleted. These cookies don't contain any information about a person or their accounts. If you refuse this cookie the site will continue to work unaffected.
If your browser doesn't accept the cookies we ask it to store, it won't be possible to apply for an Egg product, or service your account. You'll also notice that other sites on the internet, such as shopping sites or other online banking services, won't work either.
You can set up your web browser to inform you when cookies are set or to prevent cookies from being set, for example, in Microsoft Internet Explorer, from the menu select Tools, Internet Options and Privacy. However, if you choose to reject cookies, you will not be able to use our online services or website features.
